increased speed and mobility resulting from modification of the skeleton and muscles. when vertabrate shifted from filter feeding to active predation new sensory organs motor skills and intergrative controls became essential for location and capture of larger pray. endoskelton permits almost unlimited body size

For the increased speed it developed a postanal tail for movement. The more advanced sensory organs are a brain/ganglian. And they developed a notochord as well.
